Juntendo University was established in 1838 as a western medical institution. Since then, it boasts the longest history and tradition in Japan, spanning about 180 years. Our general medicine department covers a wide range of areas, from primary care and infectious diseases to preventive medicine, and provides daily medical care. As medical science and medical care continually develops, university hospitals must provide advanced medical care. As a result, they tend to be more and more specialized. However, on the other hand, diseases are diversifying and becoming more complex due to various factors such as population aging. Therefore, it is crucial to have comprehensive clinical capabilities centered around internal medicine that can appropriately meet the diverse needs of patients. Given the above, university hospitals need departments that strive to provide holistic and comprehensive medical care and with this ideation/philosophy in mind, our general medicine department is playing an active role.
